  • We Already Have SafeContractor. Do We Really Need to Apply for CHAS As Well?

If your construction or trade business has already gone through the rigorous process of securing a SafeContractor accreditation, congratulations are in order. It proves that your internal health and safety practices meet clear, audited UK thresholds. However, a common question we face at SEI Tech International from expanding contractors is: If we already have one badge, do we really need to go through the hassle of applying for another?

The short answer is that while both schemes assess your safety systems, they do not carry the same weight with every commercial client. Depending on the specific supply chains you are trying to break into, securing a dedicated CHAS Construction accreditation might be the missing piece of the puzzle that unlocks major tier-1 and public sector projects.

    Understanding the SSIP Umbrella

To understand why this overlap happens, we have to look at Safety Schemes in Procurement (SSIP). Both SafeContractor and CHAS are registered members of SSIP. In an ideal world, the mutual recognition rule means that if you hold one SSIP badge, a principal contractor should theoretically accept it as proof of your health and safety compliance.

In reality, many procurement departments tend to ignore this theory. Large-scale developers, local councils, and housing associations tend to make PQQ criteria part of the tender process. For instance, if there is a multi-million-pound project that specifies the need for a CHAS certification to use their portals, then having any other badge will be a roadblock.

3 Reasons Why Principal Contractors Still Insist on CHAS

If you are weighing up whether to add another certification to your portfolio, consider these operational realities:

    ●       The Construction Sector Standard: While SafeContractor spans across retail, leisure, and facility management, CHAS has its roots firmly planted in deep construction supply chains. It remains the default language of UK site managers.

    ●       Upgrading to the Common Assessment Standard (CAS): If you are targeting high-value commercial tenders, a basic health and safety check is no longer enough. The advanced tiers of CHAS allow you to pre-qualify across environmental, quality, and corporate social responsibility (CSR) matrices in one go.

    ●       Supply Chain Visibility: Many major UK build firms manage their entire subcontractor database exclusively through the CHAS portal. If you aren't visible on that specific system, your business simply won't appear when project managers search for compliant local trades.

    Streamlining the Paperwork

We know that managing paperwork can feel like a full-time distraction from running your actual sites. Navigating the transition from one scheme to another shouldn't mean starting from scratch.

Because we understand the precise criteria required for a CHAS Safe Contractor submission, our consultancy team can map your existing SafeContractor evidence directly across to meet the specific requirements of the CHAS portal. We strip away the duplication of effort, ensuring your risk assessments, training records, and policy documents are perfectly aligned for a rapid, successful assessment.
