Portable Appliance Testing (PAT) • UK Nationwide

PAT Testing

Portable Appliance Testing (PAT) is one of the quickest and most effective ways to ensure a safe environment for your employees, clients, or residents.

Our PAT testing process involves inspecting the physical condition of each portable electrical appliance, assessing its electrical integrity, and verifying that all protective and safety features are functioning correctly to reduce the risk of electric shock or fire.

Frequently Asked Questions

Clear answers to help you understand PAT testing requirements and costs.

1. Why is Electrical Equipment Testing (PAT) important?

PAT testing helps ensure that electrical equipment is safe to use. Faulty or damaged appliances significantly increase the risk of electric shock, fire, injury, and property damage. Regular testing protects your staff, customers, and premises.

2. Do I need Electrical Equipment Testing (PAT) for insurance purposes?

Some insurers require evidence that PAT testing is carried out as part of their policy conditions. This demonstrates that electrical equipment is being properly maintained.

If an incident occurs due to faulty equipment and no PAT testing records are available, an insurer may refuse to honour a claim.

3. What needs to be tested during a PAT test?

In general, any item that plugs into a power source should be included in a PAT testing programme. This typically includes:

  • Office equipment (computers, monitors, printers, photocopiers)
  • Kitchen appliances (kettles, microwaves, fridges)
  • Extension leads, chargers, and power adapters
4. How much does Electrical Equipment Testing (PAT) cost?

The honest answer — it depends. PAT testing is usually priced per unit.

For example, a desktop computer setup with two monitors would be counted as six units: the computer, two monitors, and three power leads.

When requesting a quote, provide an estimated number of items requiring testing. If you are unsure, share a copy of your previous PAT report or asset register — we will be happy to assist.
