Course Overview

The ProQual Level 4 Award in Advanced Fire Risk Assessment (RQF) is a nationally recognised qualification awarded by ProQual and regulated by Ofqual.

This qualification is designed for professionals who conduct fire risk assessments (FRAs) in high-risk buildings. It strengthens knowledge, practical skills, and professional behaviours in line with BS 8674 – Built Environment: Framework for Competence of Individual Fire Risk Assessors.

Through two mandatory units — Principles and Practice of Advanced Fire Risk Assessment — learners develop the competence required to undertake complex assessments in environments with elevated fire risk, including:

  • Multi-storey residential buildings

  • Large commercial premises

  • Healthcare facilities

  • Heritage properties

  • Buildings with complex escape strategies

  • Premises presenting abnormal hazards

This Level 4 Award is recognised across the UK fire safety sector and is highly regarded by employers, enforcement bodies, and professional organisations. It is particularly suited to professionals seeking to demonstrate competence in advanced fire risk assessment or progress toward higher levels of professional recognition.

Course Structure

To achieve the Level 4 Award, learners must complete two mandatory units:

  1. Principles of the Advanced Fire Risk Assessment

  2. Practice of the Advanced Fire Risk Assessment

Both units must be successfully completed to achieve the full qualification.

Entry Requirements

To enrol, candidates must:

  • Be 18 years or older

  • Either hold the ProQual Level 3 Intermediate Fire Risk Assessment qualification or

  • Have at least three years’ experience completing FRAs in medium-risk buildings

  • Be in a role that provides access to high-risk fire risk assessment activities (or undertake centre-supported simulation where permitted)

Evidence of prior qualifications or professional experience will be reviewed during initial assessment.

Assessment Method

This is a competence-based qualification assessed through a portfolio of evidence. Learners must demonstrate achievement of all learning outcomes and assessment criteria.

Assessment may include:

  • Assessor observations

  • Written assignments

  • Professional discussions

  • Fire risk assessment reports

  • Evidence from real or centre-supported simulated assessments

Learners must complete a minimum of two high-risk fire risk assessments as part of the evidence requirements.
