Course Description
Level 3 Award in the Inspection and Testing of Fire Resisting Door Installations
The ProQual Level 3 Award in the Inspection and Testing of Fire Resisting Door Installations is a nationally recognised
qualification that demonstrates a learner’s competence in assessing and testing fireresisting door installations
in line with current fire safety legislation and standards. It is suitable for professionals responsible for ensuring
that fire doors meet regulatory requirements and perform effectively in the event of a fire.
Candidate Entry Requirements
For Fire Door Installers:
Learners who currently install fire doors are expected to hold the ProQual Level 2 Diploma in Installing Fire Resisting Timber
Door-sets.
For Supervisors and Responsible Persons:
Candidates employed in supervisory or responsible roles should be able to demonstrate relevant health and safety knowledge,
typically evidenced by qualifications such as NEBOSH, SMSTS, or SSSTS.
Training centres must complete an initial assessment of each learner’s existing skills and knowledge to identify any gaps
and plan appropriate assessment activities.
Course Modules
1. Core Module
This module introduces the key regulations, legislation and principles that underpin fire protection systems, along with
the fundamentals of fire behaviour and fire testing.
Building Regulations
This section provides an overview of the Building Regulations in the UK, with particular focus on fire protection
and construction industry standards such as Approved Document B. Learners explore passive and active fire protection
measures, relevant guidance documents (including the Regulatory Reform (Fire Safety) Order), installer certification,
product certification, and UKCA marking requirements.
Fire and Fire Testing
Learners gain an understanding of fire behaviour, how fires develop, and how fire testing is conducted in laboratory environments.
This includes:
- Large-scale fire resistance testing
- Small-scale material/component testing
- Key differences between UK British Standards and European fire testing standards
- Case studies of notable fires over the past 50 years
2. Fire-Rated Timber Doorsets Module
This module introduces the design, purpose and installation requirements of fire-rated timber doorsets.
It covers:
- Why fire-resisting doors are required
- Definitions and components of a doorset
- Testing methods for fire-rated doorsets
- Types of timber doorsets
- Supporting construction and wall-to-frame requirements
- Door leaf installation and configuration
- Essential hardware components
- Intumescent and smoke seals
- Vision panels, including side panels and overpanels
Learners also explore how correct installation and maintenance of doorsets prevent fire and smoke spread through buildings.
Day 2: Fire Door Maintenance and Repair Module
This day focuses on the maintenance, repair and compliance requirements for fire-resisting doors.
Topics include:
- Legal requirements under the Regulatory Reform (Fire Safety) Order 2005
- Caveats relating to component changes and system integrity
- Detailed maintenance practices for timber fire doors
- Maintenance considerations for door frames, leaves, seals, vision panels and ironmongery
- Acceptable substitutions and limitations for ironmongery components
- Preventative maintenance strategies for high-traffic environments
- An introduction to maintaining steel, composite and fabric fire doors
- Refurbishment of heritage and older fire doors
- Troubleshooting common issues such as binding, excessive gaps or failure to close
Day 3: Practical Training and Written Assessment
Learners participate in hands-on inspection training, including:
- Practical group exercises
- Software-based inspection recording
- Real inspection scenarios
A written assessment of 52 questions must be completed, with a 75% pass mark required to progress to the final
practical inspection assessment.
Candidates who pass the written assessment will be allocated a date and time for their Level 3 Inspection Assessment.
Final Assessment: Level 3 Inspection Assessment
Once the written component is passed and all learning criteria have been met, learners complete the final
inspection assessment on an allocated date.
The qualification confirms competence in the inspection and testing of fire-resisting door installations in accordance with current fire safety regulations.
